Tablet weaving is a fun and exciting way to weave beautiful bands, belts and similar items.
Tablet weaving is a special band weaving technique used to produce both simple and more complex bands and edges with many different patterns and structures. In tablet weaving, small square tablets with a hole in each corner are used to control the warp threads. The warp is threaded through each of the four holes in the tablet. The number of tablets required to achieve the desired pattern and width of the band are assembled and placed on their edge, forming the shed in the weaving. At one end, all warp threads are gathered at a fixed point, while the other end is secured to the weaver's belt.
The earliest tablet-woven textiles from Denmark date back to the Early Iron Age, and they have been preserved in bogs, graves, and in connection with weapon offerings. The earliest find of weaving tablets consists of two wooden tablets found in Dejbjerg Bog near Skjern in West Jutland. They have recently been dated to the 1st to 3rd century AD.
