Clothing and Textiles in Danish Prehistory provides a comprehensive overview of the development and production of the clothing worn by prehistoric people in Denmark, from the oldest Stone Age up to and including the Viking Age, whether made of skin or woven fabric. The narrative of prehistoric dress also includes belts, hats, shoes, and hairstyles.
For thousands of years, textiles and skins have protected us from the elements, and Denmark boasts one of the world's most unique collections of prehistoric textiles and garments. Research into these collections over the past 20 years has yielded many surprising new results. We therefore now know much more about the materials, colours, and garments worn in prehistoric times. This tells us a great deal about our ancestors, and thus also a great deal about ourselves.
Ulla Mannering is a prehistoric archaeologist specializing in Northern European costume and textile production. From 2005-2016, she worked at the Danish National Research Foundation's Centre for Textile Research, which she co-initiated. From 2010, she was simultaneously employed as a senior researcher at the National Museum of Denmark, where she has been a research professor since 2020.
