A comprehensive guide to mastering textile design, combining technical insight, artistic expression, and storytelling. With detailed instructions including both text and images. 495 pages.
The book presents an innovative pedagogical approach to the study of woven textile design, encouraging the reader to take a seat at the loom and create their own narratives. The book contains detailed guides, where the reader learns to create textiles from scratch – from selecting fibers and yarns to basic weaving techniques, multi-layered constructions, and digital jacquard design. All the guides are combined with sensory and atmospheric textile stories created by design students from Aalto ARTS University in Finland.
INTERWOVEN is an inspiring exploration of woven textile design. The book delves into weaving structures as well as the fibers and yarns that form their foundation, offering a unique insight into the fascinating world of textiles.
INTERWOVEN explores how the rich and diverse history of textiles has been closely linked to human innovation – from prehistoric weaving to the development of binary code and on to today's groundbreaking materials and the current pursuit of sustainability. Through an examination of textiles' past and present, as well as their cross-cultural roles, meanings, and influences, INTERWOVEN shows how textiles have served as a medium for telling the story of humanity throughout history.
